Tuesday July 2nd

(26)Tuesday July 2nd.
A fair morning finally broke through the mists, and the Castle soon gave us all ( 4 of us) a panorama of the city and the heights back of the older sections the Salisbury Crags, surrounded by rocks called Arthur's Seat.  I spent the morning rambling with D.S.B., C.F B +F C S roaming here and there among dirty courts, crooked streets, and decaying houses, in search of places made memorable by men known of old,or illuminated by the wonderfully vivid tales of Walter Scott.
All this city was clear to recall from the days spent in most of its haunts with literary associations in company with F.H.G. three years past.
At noon I took leave of the party, to journey alone to London, planning to spend a couple of days with Father and S + W before the others arrived. (27)
The eight-hour ride lay through a diversity of scenery,-through wide stretching plains of well-cultivated fields, along the east coast of England, through the hills of Yorkshire, etc. But a heavy rain and low clouds shut off any distant view before Durham was reached, so I gave myself up to reading Scott's "Heart of Midlothian," and taking meals as they came along. The heart of M. pertains to many places familiar in Edinburgh and near Dumfries.
Father and S + W met me at the Saint Pancras station -a happy reunion. We called upon Maude and Jeannie, then went with Swithin, to find Lillian napping.
