Tuesday, July 9th

July 9th
The clouds of the previous day had blown away before dawn, and a clear sky greeted us. But by 10 am, the time of our start, masses of cloud dotted the sky, making it uncertain to get good pictures.  However, J.C.S and I would clamber down from the top of the coach and run ahead to get a snap shot (39) when light and setting seemed opportunely to suit together.  The road lay through gloriously green rolling country, with long grades sweeping gently up and down between bordering trees and hedges. 19 miles took us to the King's Head at Cuchfield situated on rising ground with wide vales dropping off to rising hills again on all sides of us. The south Downs shut off our views of the sea.  But we could lunch eagerly, after exercise in a nearly lot, with hopes of striking across the barrier of hills to Brighton.
At three we were once more aboard the coach, for the last stage in England.  The country continued to show wide stretching fields with potatoes and oats and abundant grass growing everywhere. Crossing a vale some six miles wide, we mounted a high hill, - crossing the Great fourth downs where we got off to walk.  These hills are without trees, - (40) all green graying ground.  Then we swung down a long descent, circled through five residences, and were soon in Brighton, leaving our coach at the Hotel Metropole.
Shortly after our arrival Mr. Vanderbuilt's coach drove in, with a S.B. on the box.
Our total driving distance was over 56 miles.  Our total traveling time was 7 hrs. 14 min., an average of 1 mile in 7 4/7 min., or about 8 miles an hour.
After dinner at the Metropole, we took a big Renault to New Haven harbor. There we boarded ship for Dieppe, securing "berths" to stretch ourselves in till 3 o'clock in the morning. The channel was as smooth as possible, -in fact we felt nothing but the vibrations of our own ship. A tired lot we were when we sought rooms at Dieppe, after a quick inspection at the customs.  The order was- sleep late. (41)
