Wednesday, July 10th

 Wednesday, July 10th
Accordingly, we took breakfast and luncheon together at 12:30. Then we rambled along the esplanade by the sea, wandered over the town, dodged showers, got money changed, bought soap - none being provided by the hotels, and generally made inspection of our first French town, - with a little effort occasionally, at catching the meaning of the lingo.
Dieppe has memories of all the ancient struggles between Eng. + France, often changing hands. The old Chateau was constructed between 1443 + 1458, on remains of a fort constructed by a brother of Wm. The Conqueror.
In the afternoon we wandered along the "plage". But the sea was too enticing, so all of us went in for a plunge among the folk of France. The beach is all cobbles. Hotels stretch along 100 yds. back from the sea, with walks, driveways, and a grass play ground between.  The bathers went the distance (42) in scantiness of clothing.
